On April 14, 2018- StoneStreet Wealth Management’s John Chidwick and his family joined more than 500 others to support a benefit 5K in honor of 17-year-old Taylor Wind. The Team Taylor Environmental 5K was held in Moorseville at Troutman ESC Park. Taylor was diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Cancer last year. Papillary Thyroid Cancer is an aggressive cancer which spread through her neck. Following more than a year of treatments, Taylor is now in remission.
Throughout the Wind’s cancer journey the family discovered that there were “clusters” of these cancers in their area of Moorseville. To help dig into possible environmental connections the Wind’s created the Team Taylor Environmental Fund to raise money for a research study looking into to the many rare cancers in the Wind’s area. The grant is also sponsored by Thyroid Cancer Survivor Association.
“We are doing this study to kind of see what do we all share in common in this area, what are we all doing that is possibly giving us this risk of getting thyroid cancer,” Susan Wind told WOSCTV in early April.
“This is serious, and if there is something in the environment causing these cancers then we need to learn what it is,” Wind said.
The April 5k aimed to raise funds for the research study being conducted with Duke University and Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center to find any possible environmental links. More than 30 people in the Wind’s ZIP code near Lake Norman are currently in the study.
So far the Wind’s have raised more than $100,000 for the Team Taylor Environmental Fund.
