Earlier this year, StoneStreet Wealth Management and several other local businesses sponsored the first ever Incredible Teens Award and Scholarships honoring teens from Iredell County. The Incredible Teens Award and Scholarships recognized 18 local teenagers from our local area with awards and awarded five students with a $1,000 college scholarship.
The award seeks to recognize deserving teens for more than just their academic skills. These teens showed the traits of caring, honesty, and respect to compete for this honor. The Incredible Teens Award and Scholarships for local area teens were the idea of the Statesville Record and Landmark and Mooresville Tribune newspapers. And, StoneStreet Wealth Management played a significant role in sponsoring the first-ever annual event.
“We got involved in the Incredible Teens Award and scholarships because we wanted to give back to the community,” said John Chidwick, managing partner at StoneStreet Wealth Management. “These teens have demonstrated so much of what we love about our community in Iredell County. We were honored to partner with the Statesville Record and Landmark and Mooresville Tribune to recognize them.”
The scholarships and awards aimed to recognize deserving teens that showed the traits of caring, honesty, and respect. While the selection committee considered the students’ grades, they focused primarily on choosing finalists that demonstrated caring, honesty, and respect in their homes, churches, schools, or in the local community. The committee focused on how the teens’ activities impacted others in their community as well as their impact in the classroom.
The scholarships’ three sponsors, StoneStreet Wealth Management, Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home, and Eagle Rentals, sifted through 67 applications from students from 13 different schools. After a month of deliberation, the selection committee narrowed the applicants down to the 18 best caring, honest, and respectful teens and presented the Incredible Teens Award. And, StoneStreet Wealth Management and other sponsors awarded five of the best teens with $1,000 college scholarships.
“The process and evaluation of each student’s accomplishments was grueling,” said Chidwick. “These students should all be proud because coming up with a clear winner was almost impossible for the selection committee. They are all winners just for being included. It was humbling to be a parent and also energizing because these kids are setting a great example for our kids.”
The selection committee honored the award finalists at a dinner in April at the Charles Mack Citizen Center in Mooresville. Each of the 18 recipients received medallions, a certificate, and five students each won a $1,000 college scholarship.
The Statesville Record and Landmark and Mooresville Tribune newspapers came up with the idea for the Incredible Teens awards and scholarship in 2016. And, they sought applications and nominations from the local community in early 2017.
The selection committee included not only community leaders from StoneStreet Wealth Management, Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home, and Eagle Rentals but also representatives from Our Towns Habitat for Humanity, Mooresville Graded Schools, West Iredell Middle School, the Mooresville Tribune, and the Record & Landmark.
While this was the first year for the awards and scholarships, StoneStreet Wealth Management and the other community leaders look to make this an annual tradition. StoneStreet Wealth Management is passionate about helping and educating high school students about finance, which is why they are looking to begin offering quarterly workshops to help kids learn how to handle money and how to invest.
